Everyday people are heroes – Mayor Inday
DAVAO CITY – Presidential daughter and Mayor Sara Z. Duterte said here that everyday people like the kasambahays (helpers), overseas Filipino workers, traffic enforcers, street sweepers, mother, fathers, are heroes, too.
In her message, Mayor Inday said National Heroes’ Day is a celebration of the sacrifices of our national heroes, but it should also celebrate the contributions of the nameless heroes who help shape and build the country.
Mayor Inday underscored the importance of not letting go of the opportunities to become heroes. These opportunities, she said, are present all the time, even during simple circumstances.
"It will be our actions that will define us," said the mayor in her message read by lawyer Lawrence Bantiding, assistant administrator for operations, during the commemoration of the National Heroes’ Day at the Osmeña Park Monday.
“We can all become heroes and everyday is an opportunity to do heroic deeds," the mayor said.
Filipino heroes, according to Mayor Inday, should serve as inspiration for the public to do something that will inspire and change the lives of other people and shape better communities.
“We stand under the shadow of the Monument of Unknown Soldiers, not because history has forgotten their names. We are here because we remember their actions. It is not by the name, or lack thereof, that defined them, but their actions," she said.
Mayor Inday added that National Heroes’ Day is a time to "honor those who had fallen – those who fought well and fell, those who fell and stood up again, and those who keep on fighting in the name of our nation."
