- By ANTHONY GIRON

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — The number of dengue and chikungunya cases has reached alarming proportions in Cavite province, the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) reported yesterday.

Dr. Nelson C. Soriano, PESU head, said that although there were no outbreak reported in any cities and municipalities of the province, the number of those afflicted by dengue and chinkungaya viruscarrying mosquitoes is on the “increasing trend.”

With the trend, Soriano reminded residents to be wary and take precaution against the viruses. “It is best for everyone to be aware and take measures now than to act when the outbreak arises,” he said as he called on the citizens to take a united stand against the deadly viruses..

The veteran epidemiologist said that viruses can be prevented starting from the family and barangay (village) levels with sanitation and proper treatment and clean environment first and foremost, among other actions.

Health Education Promotion Officer II Annabelle R. Dilig said that there were 13 dengue deaths and 2,701 cases reported in Morbidity Week 35 or the period covering the period from Jan. 1 to Sept. 3 this year.

The dengue coordinator reported that the case number was higher by 103 incidents that were recorded in Morbidity Week 34 or the period from Jan. 1 to Aug. 27 this year.
