DOLE to OFWs: Beware on online investment scam

- By SAMUEL P. MEDENILLA

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) warned overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) yesterday of a new online investment scam, which has been using the name of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

In a statement, Bello disclosed he has received reports that some unscrupulous individuals are soliciting money from OFWs in Facebook supposedly upon his instructions.

He denied having any links to the people behind the fake account, which he already reported to the Facebook management for immediate action.

“I am advising the public, especially our OFWs, to be vigilant so as not to be victimized by these individuals… I urge you not to give any information, especially financial in nature, to unidentified persons,” Bello said.

To avoid being victimized by such scam, the labor chief urged OFWs to only transact with legitimate business enterprises.

Bello urged OFWs to report other similar bogus accounts at DOLE’s Hotline 1349.
