TAGUM, Davao del Norte — Junmilardo Ogayre, who wants to represent the country internationally but aspires to become a professional like his idol Nonito Donaire, provided the lone bright spot for Davao City in boxing as Cagayan de Oro punched its way to five gold medals during the last day of competitions in the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championships.

A 17-year-old criminology major from the University of Mindanao, Ogayre topped the junior boys lightweight class by outpointing Jerald Into of Zamboanga del Sur on the strength of his potent right hand.

“My idol is Donaire because of his style and his timing,” said Ogayre, the sixth of eight siblings.

“Someday, I would like to fight for the national team but my real dream is to become a professional like Donaire,” added Ogayre.

Cagayan de Oro flashed its fangs with light pinweight John Vincent Pangga and junior light flyweight Marco John Rementizo beating their rivals in the finals as well as CDO lady punchers Gina Casin (48kg), Marty Ann Laug (38kg) and Jolibeth Maglasang (40kg) before an appreciative weekend crowd at the Tagum Trade Center.

General Santos City, where Manny Pacquiao comes from, captured four golds thanks to pinweight Criz Russu Laurente, light bantam RV Denega and Angela Bianca Laurente (54kg) and Roxan Kapawan (57kg) in the distaff side.

Other top performers include light-fly Reymark Alicaba, bantam Richard Bulacan and pinweight Jean Miguillan, who scored victories for Davao del Sur while Panabo City, another boxing hotbed, drew one from light paperweight Carl John Austria.

Light mosquito Rodel Gamo also bagged Bago City’s only gold during the meet that drew the participation of 320 young boxers from across the country.

Dancesport, meanwhile, was dominated by Cebu City as eight gold medals were brought home after competitions held at the Rotary Park Gym.

Lloyd Simon Asuque and Raylyn Jhea Romeo bagged two golds each, the standard junior C and latin junior C events, a feat duplicated by Andrew Ysla and Noelyn Mie Pedrano in the standard youth A and Latin youth A.
