Nothing’s impossible with God but He needs our cooperation

- By FR. BEL SAN LUIS, SVD

AS we come closer to the birthday of our Lord Jesus, let us reflect on the mystery of God who became human.

* ** First, when the angel told Mary that she had won God’s favor; that she would be the mother of the Messiah, she asked the angel, how could this happen since she was a virgin. The angel told her that the Holy Spirit would “overshadow” her.

* **

Mary had no hope of bearing a child since she had no relation with man. She was a virgin.

Then the angel also told her that her cousin Elizabeth would conceive a child. She who was elderly and sterile.

* **

And finally, before Mary’s annunciation, the human race had no hope of salvation. It was held in slavery by Satan. But the power of God changed all that. For “nothing is impossible with God.”

* **

God wanted to show the world that the birth of the Messiah would be done totally by His divine power. WELL, NOT TOTALLY.

The reason is because He also wanted human persons to cooperate with His plan.

* **

God, as we know, works in the same way in each of our lives. He wants to do great things through each one of us. But he needs our cooperation He needs our active faith.

*** For instance, we pray to pass the board exam, but we should burn the proverbial “midnight oil”; we ask God for good health, but we must avoid eating food rich in cholesterol or “collaterals that block your artilleries (arteries),” as someone put it

** * And if we pray for national progress, we should avoid stealing from the coffers of the government, especially those working in the BIR, Bureau of Customs, and Bureau of Immigration.

*** Our family may be in disarray. Our lives may be troubled. But there is hope, because God’s power, in the person of Jesus, has entered our world. Nothing is impossible with God.

But He needs our cooperation.

*** GOD: ‘DON’T BLAME ME.’ Once heavy rains pounded and flooded a town in Bulacan. As the water kept rising, inundating the houses, a man known for his piety climbed up to the second floor of his house.

** * A man on a rescue boat (banca) came near and yelled, “Come, I came to save you.” But the man said, “Don’t worry, I have faith in the Lord. He will save me.”

The water continued to rise. This time the man had to climb to the rooftop. A helicopter flew overhead to rescue him. But again he said, “I trust in God. He will save me.”

*** Finally, the water rose so high that it went over the man’s head and he drowned. When he woke up in the next life, he came face to face with God. The devout man said, “Lord, I have always lived a good life, praying always. Why didn’t you save me?”

God replied, “Don’t blame me. Didn’t I send that boat and helicopter?”

***

Just praying and trusting in the Lord is not enough. We should do our counterpart.

*** GIVE LOVE ON CHRISTMAS. I am appealing on behalf of some indigent sick we are helping like Dante Cabansag and Fr. Ruben Mamuad, SVD who are undergoing hemodialysis thrice weekly. Also M. Maranga, J. Lopez, Rosanna Cayunda sick of pulmonary ailments and hence, cannot work.

***

Let me thank our very generous latest donors who responded to our appeal: MANNY SANTOS, GERRY “Mr. Freeze” SANTOS, WILLY-LINA ONG, JOCELYN GALVAN.
