Local execs can’t tax goods passing through area

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) ordered the country’s local chief executives (LCEs) to refrain from imposing various taxes, fees and other charges on transported goods and passengers passing through their territorial jurisdictions. DILG Secretary Ismael ‘Mike’ D. Sueno warned of strict sanctions should the local executives insist on collecting illegal fees and taxes for inter-province transport of goods and passengers. “This is the nth time that we have issued a memorandum regarding the illegal imposition of pass-through fees on transported goods and passengers. We will be stricter this time in monitoring LGU compliance to this directive,” Sueno said. He called for the immediate repeal of local ordinances authorizing the levy of fees and taxes on inter-province transport of goods, regulatory fees from passengers in local ports, and any other additional taxes or fees in any form upon transporting goods and passengers.
