Palace says Mocha Uson ‘free to quit’ MTRCB

- By ARGYLL CYRUS B. GEDUCOS

Malacañang said yesterday that social media personality Mocha Uson is free to resign as board member of the Movie and Televi-

sion Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) if she so chooses.

Last Friday, Uson posted a video of her rants against what she found as objectionable scenes in a couple of television programs, saying she had better quit her post than be part of the MTRCB’s alleged failure to regulate TV shows properly.

Yesterday, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Uson can resign from her position any time, but expressed confidence that she will remain a staunch supporter of President Duterte.

“I’m not sure about the – exactly the issues being involved. But if she feels that she needs to quit, then she is free to do so,” Abella said over Radyo ng Bayan.

“But as far as I know, she still said that she would be continually supporting the President in whatever capacity that she has,” he added.

Earlier, Uson said she was investigating the complaints of some netizens regarding the racy scenes from the TV shows “The Better Half ” and “Ipaglaban Mo,” both aired over ABS-CBN.

In her Facebook post, Uson said this is not the first time that she has received complaints about the pilot episode of “The Better Half” and promised to bring it up to MTRCB Chairman Rachel Arenas.

She also said that the certain episode of “Ipaglaban Mo” aired on February 11 which featured a rape scene, was not reviewed by the MTRCB.

“Para sa kasamahan ko sa MTRCB (To my MTRCB colleagues), let me remind you I am not answerable to anyone but to the Filipino people and to the President who appointed me,” she said.

“Kung may nasasagasaan ako sa inyo pasensya na po paalala lang tayo ay public servant. Tayo ay alipin ng taumbayan (If I am offending someone, I’m sorry but let me remind you that we are public servants, slaves of the Filipino people),” she added.

In a Facebook live video, Uson said that although she disagrees with some of the MTRCB policies, there is nothing she can do because major TV networks allegedly have connections with some board members.

“Sayang lang po ’yung tax na binabayad niyo sa amin [sa MTRCB] (Your taxes that are used to pay us have gone to waste),” she said.

She also said that TV networks are also able to submit incomplete details or only part of a certain episode due to “selfregulation” which allows TV networks to rate their shows PG (Parental Guidance) or SPG (Strict Parental Guidance).

She said TV networks only have the first episode or pilot episode of a drama series reviewed by the agency while the rest of its run are being “selfregulated.”

“Kung hindi po natin makukumbinsi ang mga board members na pigilan itong mga malalaswang eksena sa telebisyon, magre-resign na lang po ako dahil hindi ko maaatim na tanggapin ang buwis niyo tapos hahayaan ko lang po ang mga programang ito (If we can’t convince the board members to stop these kinds of scenes in TV, I will just resign because I can’t accept your taxes if I will just let it pass),” she said.
