-

DABAWENYOS ARE in for a back-to-back treat this week as stars of GMA Network’s top-rating telefantasya “Encantadia” and the much-awaited”Mulawin Vs. Ravena” join in the celebration of the 80th Araw ng Dabaw.

Dennis Trillo, who will banner the “Mulawin Vs. Ravena” series, was at Gaisano Mall Toril yesterday to promote his upcoming program. Dennis was accompanied by his co-stars Dion Ignacio and Kiko Estrada in a Kapuso Mall Show.

Also gracing the Araw ng Dabaw festivities that day are Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali; and Derrick Monasterio and Bea Binene of the same show. Known as BiGuel and DerBea, respectively, they were at Abreeza Mall for a show.

Today, “Encantadia” further brings magic to the vibrant festivities in Davao City as its lead stars Ruru Madrid, Sanya Lopez and Glaiza de Castro hold their Kapuso Mall Show at SM City Davao, 4 p.m.

Sharon Cuneta, Freddie Aguilar, Pilita Corrales, Basil Valdez, VST & Company, Martin Nievera, and Juan Dela Cruz band are just some of the iconic artists whose careers were launched and nurtured by Vicor Music, a record label that celebrated its 50th year in the music industry recently.

Held at the auditorium of the Philippine Stock Exchange in Ortigas Center, Pasig, Vicor Music Corporation’s milestone also marked the five decades since founders Vic Del Rosario Jr. and Orly Ilacad first ventured into the music industry and established their company in 1966.

As Vicor (a mash up of their names), Del Rosario and Ilacad contributed to changing the course of the music industry by paving the way for several major music movements in Pinoy pop. Most notable of these were the jukebox hits craze of the late ’60s and early ’70s, and the Manila sound and Pinoy rock movement of the mid-to-late ’70s.

Vicor also gave birth to the careers of some of the biggest and most memorable names in Pinoy pop – Victor Wood, Rico J. Puno, Rey Valera, Anthony Castelo, Asin, Kuh Ledesma, Regine Velasquez, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ric Segreto, Side A, Aiza Seguerra, Yoyoy Villame, April Boys, Nyoy Volante, and hundreds of artists who each made their unique mark in Philippine pop music.

Titled “The Vicor Story, Celebrating 50 Years,” the party was attended by former and current employees and artists alike. It was also the night’s theme with guests recalling their story and their part in establishing the company as one of the most successful local labels ever.

Vicor artists in attendance were Pilita Corrales (who later sang “Kapantay Ay Langit”), Tirso Cruz III, Ali Sotto (formerly Aloha), Lirio Vital, Eva Eugenio, Mariz and husband Ronnie Ricketts, Sen. Tito Sotto (who was formerly VP for productions) and songwriters Babsie Molina and sisters Margot and Edith Gallardo.

Martin Nievera was also present and sang a five-song medley of his hits with Vicor that included “Please Don’t Throw My Love Away,” “How Can I,” “Be My Lady,” “Say That You Love Me,” and “Pain.” Vicor also reaffirmed its commitment to seeking out new and fresh talent when it presented young Aubrey Caraan as its latest artist.

Current Vicor Music president and Chief Operating Officer Tony M. Ocampo formally opened and welcomed the guests that evening. Ocampo started as a media officer for Vicor in 1969.

The celebration also marked the first time in decades that Del Rosario and Ilacad shared the stage together to represent Vicor. In the early years, the two ran the company with Ilacad taking charge of the music production, while Del Rosario ran the day-to-day business. Ilacad eventually went his own way and established OctoArts Films International while Del Rosario built his multi-media company Viva and remains today as Vicor’s Chief Executive Officer.
