Not their fate to die

- FR. BEL R. SAN LUIS, SVD

By

THERE’S a saying, “When it’s your time to die, you cannot stop it.” Conversely, when it is NOT yet your time to die, somehow you can elude it.

This is true of a friend mother and daughter who eluded death in the crash of the ill-fated bus LeoMarick after it plunged into a 100-foot-deep ravine in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, last April 18, killing 31 passengers.

* * * Thirty minutes after boarding the bus at 5 p.m. in Ilagan, Isabela, Bernadette V. received a call from a friend to return, frantically saying, “Come back. Somebody is interested to buy your property here. He wants to talk to you here immediately.”

Reluctantly, Bernadette who was about to doze off called the conductor and told him that she and her daughter were getting off.

* * * About an hour later, the bus plowed through a guard rail, falling into the deep ravine. When they heard of that tragic crash, they were trembling, shocked, and speechless for some minutes. In that bus, they had been seated in the third row behind the driver. All those seated there up to the middle rows died in the crash.

*** “Until now I’m still dazed and scared of riding a bus,” Bernadette said days after the crash. Thanking the Lord profusely, she added, “God has still an unfinished mission for me in this world.”

*** LESSON: The Lord says, “Death comes like a thief in the night.” We don’t know WHEN and HOW we’ll leave this world. Hence, let’s be prepared always… to meet our Creator.

*** THE LIGHTER SIDE. A daughter in Manila repeatedly tried to get her aging mother to fly to her home in Davao for a visit. “No way am I going to take an airplane,” was her mother’s repeated answer.

***

Exasperated, the daughter finally said, “Look, Mama, when it’s your time to go, it doesn’t matter if you’re on the ground, at sea, or in the air.”

“I know, I know,” said her mother. “I just don’t want to be in the plane when it’s time for the pilot to go.” *** Honk if you love Jesus. Text while driving if you want to MEET Him. ***

INDIGENT SICK. You will not bring your wealth to the next life. Why don’t you leave some behind to help the poor and less fortunate?

*** I am referring to some indigent sick we are supporting like Dante Cabansag and Fr. Ruben Mamuad, SVD, who are undergoing hemodialysis thrice weekly. Also M. Maranga, J. Lopez, Rosanna Cayunda, sick of pulmonary ailments and hence, cannot work.

The Lord says “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink in My name will surely get his reward” (Mk. 9:41).
