PH archers bow out

Amaya Amparo Cojuangco, Florante Matan and Paul dela Cruz bowed out in the third round of their respective events in the ongoing Archery World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

Cojuangco, who finished 28th in the qualifying round, won her first two matches in the knockout stage, before falling to Gizem Elmaagadi of Turjey, 144-143, in women’s compound event.

In the men’s compound, Paul dela Cruz also made it to the third round where he got beaten by Sergio Rogni of Italy, 144-139.

Matan, on the other hand, was eliminated by Collin Klimitchae of the United States, 6-2, in men’s recurve.

Fourteen of 16 Filipino archers made it into the KO stage, five of them reaching the second round.

In women’s recurve, Kareel Hongitan failed to score against Shin Hui of the US, 6-0; Pia Bidaure lost to Lu Lan of China, 6-0; and Nicole Marie Tagle was ousted by Gulnaz Coskun of Turkey, 7-1.

Hongitan, Bidaure and Tagle hurdled their first assignments.

In women’s compound, Abbigail Tindugan and Jennifer Chan were eliminated in the second round by Toja Ellison of Slovakia, 142-138, and Natalia Ardeeva of Russia, 141-139, respectively.

The rest of the Nationals who advanced fell on the first hurdle.

They are Luis Gabriel Moreno, Mark Javier and Rogelio Tremedad in men’s recurve, Mary Queen Ybanez in women’s recurve, Kim Concepcion in women’s compound and Niron Concepcion in men’s compound.

Joseph Vicencio and Earl Yap round out the 16-man team preparing for the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August.

The Nationals have been training daily starting this month and are hoping to improve on their one-silver, three-bronze medal haul two years ago in Singapore.

Ten gold medals are at stake in archery in Kuala Lumpur.
