Jose Rizal University guns for solo third place against host San Sebastian today when the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament goes to the SSC-R gym in Recto, Manila.

Game is at 4 p.m. with the Bombers hoping to capitalize on their 65-62 victory over the Letran Knights last Friday.

Toting a 2-2 win-loss mark, JRU is currently on a three-way logjam with Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College.

But San Sebastian is not far behind, carrying a 1-2 card at joint fourth with College of St. Benilde and University of Perpetual Help.

JRU coach Vergel Meneses is expected to rely anew on the all-around plays of Teytey Teodoro, who can be intimidating with his 17-point average.

Also stepping up for the Bombers are Jed Mendoza and Abdul Poutououchi with their 12- and 10-point clips.

Poutouochi is also slated to team up with AbdulWahal AbdulRazak to terrorize the paint, but San Sebastian is expected to retaliate as the second best defensive team in the league.

The Stags have so far allowed their rivals to score an average of just 70 points per game, a testament to their stifling defense anchored on Michael Calisaan, Jayson David, and Alvin Capobres.

Calisaan is also an offensive threat, scoring 17 points a game.

San Sebastian hopes to use its homecourt advantage to dismantle JRU and recover from a 78-73 loss to pacesetter Lyceum.

Despite that recent defeat, San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya still lauded his stalwarts’ efforts after limiting the Chiefs to below their 90-point average.

In juniors play, the San Sebastian Staglets and the JRU Light Bombers clash in the 2 p.m. opener.
