The country’s leading and upcoming junior players gear up for a fierce duel not only for titles but also for ranking points in the PPSPEPP Olivarez Open regional age group 2017 which gets going tomorrow at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque.

Close to 300 age-groupers, led by winners in the ongoing Palawan PawnshopPa­lawan Express Pera Padala circuit, will dispute the eight division titles staked in the Group 1 tournament put up by the Olivarez family as part of its long-time commitment to develop the sport and help in the country’s talent-search.

Cagayan de Oro’s Ma. Aubrey Calma, Nicole Ann Bautista from Malita, Davao, Cavite’s Denise Bernardo and Davao’s Patricia Velez banner the girls’ 18-and-under division with Ramon Bentillo from Sultan Kudarat, Davao’s Lordrenz Pacheco, Cavite’s Laurenz Quitara and Makati’s Athan Arejola leading the boys’ cast in the premier side of the week-long tournament backed by Palawan Pawnshop and presented by Slazenger.

Equipped with the latest addition to their racing parts, 4S1M-Yamaha Racing Team returned to the Batangas Racing Circuit last July 8 and 9 for the third leg of the ongoing Eneos Philippine Motorsport­s Championsh­ips.

Fresh from satisfying finishes in the second leg, their three racers, Mark Djereck Ondillo, Herbert Lopez, and Jeff Teopengco welcomed Gupita Kresna Wardhana from the Bintang Racing Team Indonesia. This leg also saw the introducti­on of the new Replica Pro Racing Pipes, Nissin brakes, Gazi suspension, and 4S1M center spring – all designed for more powerful motorbikes.

Chief mechanic Joji Sanvictore­s ensured that the racing team’s motorbikes were all tough and ready to race to win. Together with the whole mechanic crew, refreshing and re-tuning the engine were the most priority.

“On this race, we focused more on the parts that are more suitable to the tune setup of their motorbikes,” he shared.

Winners Rafael Pescos and Cinderella Lorenzo stole the spotlight from their rivals in the 42km centerpiec­e event of the country’s oldest and grandest foot race. Each of them took home the top purse of

in cash and a trophy, and booked their slots to the National Finals in Cebu City on December 3.

Pescos did not lead from the start, but gained ground on his opponents to place first with a time of 2:38:27. Erick Panique (2:43:10) and Noel Tillor (2:47:31) finished at second and third place, respective­ly.

In the distaff side, Lorenzo clocked in at 3:16:15 to clinch first place. Lany Cardona (3:23:38) followed in second place and Lizane Abella (3:29:48) came in third.

The National MILO Marathon will continue in Angeles (Aug. 6), Tarlac (Aug. 13), Naga (Aug. 27), Lucena (Sept. 3), Lipa (Sept. 10), Tagbilaran (Sept. 24), Roxas (Oct. 1), Iloilo (Oct. 8), General Santos (Oct. 15), Davao (Oct. 22), Butuan (Nov. 12), and Cagayan De Oro (Nov. 19). the five-stage regional elims on Aug. 12-13, the region being one of the hotbeds of the sport in its more than two decades of staging.

A fierce battle looms in all three divisions with the top two from the kiddies, juniors and seniors divisions, plus the top female player gaining berths in the national finals slated in October.

Centro Escolar University will bring this year’s Sportsfest opening ceremony to Smart Araneta Coliseum on Aug. 3 at 1-5 p.m.

With the theme “Isandaang Taon at Isang Dekadang Pagkakaisa,” administra­tors, faculty members, students and student athletes will gather to witness the annual sports event. Mr. and Ms. Sportsfest and dance competitio­ns with participan­ts from each schools will be the main activities set for the day.

CEU Sportsfest is part of the University’s efforts to promote the holistic developmen­t of its students through the various sports events which will challenge their physical, mental, social and moral capabiliti­es.
