Blazers coach laments getting bamboozled

- By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

There was no gentle term to describe College of St. Benilde’s lopsided 98-55 loss to Lyceum in Tuesday’s NCAA men’s basketball match as far as Blazers coach Ty Tang is concerned.

The freshman coach likened it as being beaten to a pulp not by collegiate basketball players, but professional pound-for-pound boxers.

“Para naming kinalaban si Mike Tyson at Manny Pacquiao for ten rounds, and every round we just got beaten up, beaten up, beaten up,” Tang said.

The young tactician was not only talking about their morale-shattering 43-point loss against the Pirates where the Blazers committed 40 turnovers – the worst since San Sebastian stumbled with 43 in a defeat to Letran in 2015.

Rubbing salt to their wounds was Lyceum’s season-high imposing numbers in turnover points (46), fast breaks (26), bench (70), and biggest lead in a game (46).

“They (Lyceum) are the better team, that’s for sure. But just the manner of how we lost… that’s just crazy,” said Tang, who replaced Gabby Velasco last December with a goal of improving last season’s 1-17 finish.

“Parang, we were like high school kids out there playing against a college team,” Tang added.

Despite the defeat, Tang hopes they will be able to recover quickly when they face Letran today at 4 p.m. at the Letran gym in Intramuros.

The Blazers aim to snap their three-game losing slump that put them in the cellar with Mapua and San Sebastian with similar 1-3 cards.

“I hope that this team will be able to get over this right away. Sometimes it’s not easy as a player. But good thing that we have good support in terms of our coaching staff,” Tang said.
