BASS: Mobile Bandwidth Profile of the Philippines

- WILSON CHUA DOWNLOAD

Which Mobile service should you get if mobile internet speeds are important to you ? Would it help if we can show you some data? We present the aggregated results of data gathered by BASS volunteers in the graph below.

The graph above shows the Philippines covered in two primary colors. Blue areas are where Globe has a higher average bandwidth speed than Smart. Red areas are where Smart outperforms Globe. The data is freely available as part of the ProjectBass. org. Areas in white means we don’t have any crowd sourced measures for that location. Notes on the dataset and the analysis. As Jayson B. Yu and Gray Viray astutely point out, some areas have a few sampling points only. So if for example, Globe has a single data point where Smart has none, thegraphicfor that area will show up as BLUE(Globe). Thismay not be fairly representative. So to get more details, head on over to my Tableau public analysis page for BASS.

In the meantime, some on-theground reports adds more insights to the results:

Tek Yap says “Southern Mindanao is accurate, Globe is stronger here in Davao City. Globe mobile data is faster and reliable.” Fleire Castro chimes in “Yep looks accurate now for Cebu”. However, Joseph Tabadero still “find Globe faster in some areas in Baguio”. Jose Olarte III correctly points out another aspect: “Faster” alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Connection quality matters more. Even a 100gbps connection is useless if packets keep dropping. Disclaimer As a disclaimer, the graphs are not meant to be conclusive for all the areas. Some areas have sparse data points. (Less than 10 sample data points). This is an ongoing project and we hope more volunteers can help out. Hopefully we will get more data to offer a more conclusive analysis for those sparse areas.

I hope you would be as excited as we are about BASS. Please be a part of this project. Please join by downloading the BASS app on your phone and start taking measures wherever you go. For organizationsthat share the sameideals, you can support BASS by putting a link on your website pointing to projectbass. org. My thanks in advance. Hope your tribe increases.
