Kitchen island uses and benefits

Why it’s a home feature you should take a look at

- By JOYCE REYES-AGUILA

It has been described as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of a home by the experts of interior design and home website/magazine Architectural Digest. In an article entitled "21 Stunning Kitchen Island Ideas,” it describes the home feature as a "workhorse" with its myriad of functions. Homeowners become glued to their kitchen islands and make it the “most used area in the house.”

Kitchen islands are recommended for homes who have the space, and the feature can add both vigor and utility. So, just why are kitchen islands well-loved?

• GIVES YOU SPACE TO PREPARE MEALS.

Your “flow” as you move around your kitchen involves the sink, the stove, and your refrigerator. Kitchen islands can either be the new designated space for your stove or your sink, if your home has generous space. A clean, blank island surface can give you more space to cut vegetables on or prepare the baking batter on. Its utility depends on your needs, primarily.

• PROVIDES ADDITIONAL STORAGE.

If you are still on the fence about adding an island to your home, the thought of additional space for your dinnerware can inspire you to say yes. Choose from different drawer styles, open shelves, or cabinets. If everyone at home enjoys having coffee on your kitchen island, you can store the mugs under the counter for convenience.

• OFFERS ADDITIONAL SEATING SPACE.

Big family gatherings can often mean difficulty in finding spots to eat. The living room, veranda, and sometimes even the stairs is occupied when almost everyone comes to visit. By adding stools to your kitchen island, you will be able to offer guests more seating options. For smaller get-togethers, you can serve dessert or coffee to your guests on it. You can even start doing some minor cleaning tasks as they lounge around your kitchen.

• CREATES A NEW DINING SPACE.

Diversify the experience of home meals by serving a meal or snacks on your kitchen island. Give your dining table a break. The more enclosed space will surely invite livelier conversations and can even encourage your kids to help with chores proactively as the sink is only an arm’s length away.

• FLEXIBLE USE FOR BOTH WORK AND HOMEWORK.

Do not be surprised if a laptop is frequently on your kitchen island. The stool and counter height can be inviting features for your spouse or children to prefer to work there. You can also multi-task and supervise your children’s homework as you prepare for a meal. Have them sit at the counter as they do their school work. With you nearby, they will be encouraged to ask for help, if they need any. Plan to put some additional electrical outlets for the chargers that your kitchen island guests will bring.

• VENUE FOR HOBBIES AND SEASONAL ACTIVITIES.

Kitchen islands offer generous counter space for you to indulge in crafts, review your home budget, and write checks for your bills. It is also the perfect spot to be productive for early risers to check tasks off their list. Kitchen islands can be where you wrap gifts for Christmas or decorate souvenirs for parties.
