PH math wizards capture 18 medals in China competitions
Filipino math wizards triumphed anew on the international stage when they captured 18 medals in four competitions in China.
The Philippine team members bagged four gold, six silver, and eight bronze medals in the 2017 China Western Mathematical Invitation (CWMI) in Sichuan, 16th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) in Chongqing, 14th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO) in Jiangxi, and China Northern Future Star Math Invitation (CNFSMI) in Changchun, said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).
The medalists were accompanied by their coaches James Kelvin Martin and Quennie Sarabia-Flores.
The medalists for 2017 China Western Mathematical Invitation were Sean Anderson Ty, of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (gold); Elijamin Wolfgang Claveria, of Philippine Science High School – Main (silver), Xuanye Li, of Xavier School (silver), Steven John Wang, of UNO High School (silver), Kenneth Shi and Eason Wong of Philippine Cultural College – Annex (bronze).
The 16th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad bronze medalists are Gabrielle Jackie Candano, of Aquinas University of Legazpi, Madelyn Esther Cruz, Margaret Esther Cruz, Marjana Ysabella Montañez; all from Philippine Science High School-Main.
In the 14th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad, Andres Rico Gonzales III, of Colegio de San Juan de Letran won the gold medal, while Dion Stephan Ong, of Ateneo de Manila Junior High School was awarded the silver medal.
Fedrick Lance Lim, of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Jinger Chong, of St. Jude Catholic School took home a bronze medal each.
The China Northern Future Star Math Invitation medalists Rafael Jose Santiago, of Philippine Science High School-Main (gold), Vince Jan Torres, of Sta. Rosa Science and Technology High School (gold) Emmanuel Osbert Cajayon, of Emilio Aguinaldo College (silver) and Sedrick Scott Keh, of Xavier School (silver).
