More mental preparation

- By REY BANCOD

KUALA LUMPUR – If he had his way, national basketball coach Jong Uichico said he would like to have more sessions for the team with delegation psychologist Dr. Rey Canlas.

“Not an eye-opener, but more of a realization of the importance of mental preparation,” said Uichico over breakfast Sunday.

“You see a lot of players have their own rituals before the game. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Dr. Canlas emphasized about preparing mentally for the game,” he said.

Fil-German Christian Standhardinger arrived Saturday evening to reinforce the team, but whether Mac Belo can play against Thailand at 9:30 p.m. Sunday remains a big question mark.

Belo is being tapped to replace Carl Brian Cruz who is in Lebanon for the FIBAAsia tournament.

Boxing official Bernie Atienza said they expect to get the decision anytime before game time.

Uichico said the early arrival of Standhardinger is a big boost to the team’s bid to defend its crown.

“Kailangan natin ng size sa team,” said Uichico, admitting that the squad that faced Thailand in the SEABA tournament in Manila is much, much stronger.

Uichico, however, said the Gilas Cadet squad is ready and raring to play.

The dribble-drive system remains the team’s offensive weapon, according to Uichico.

The two-time SEAG coach said the system suits the Filipinos’ playing style.

“It gives players much latitude. There’s no first option in offense. Anybody can shoot, but you have to make the right decisions,” Uichico said.
