Marcos compromise deal being studied – Aguirre

- By JEFFREY G. DAMICOG

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said the compromise deal with the Marcos family is still being studied over the return of wealth to the government.

“Masyadong maraming repercussions so yung legal na yan hindi mo basta basta maiisip in one sitting yan (There are many legal repercussions you cannot just think about it in one sitting),” he told reporters yesterday.

“I’m sure dapat pag-isipan ng husto yan, ano ba ang kakailanganin (It has to be thought out, find out what must happen),” he also said.

Recently, President Duterte revealed that the family of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos has reached out to him and expressed willingness to return wealth including gold bars.

The Secretary pointed out the Marcos family is still facing numerous cases concerning the recovery of ill-gotten wealth.

“So meron repercussion din yan sa mga cases being handled by PCGG (So there are repercussions to the cases being handled by the Presidential Commission on Good Government),” he explained.

Aguirre stressed what is important is that the compromise deal be made under the framework of the law.

“Dapat merong enabling law or initiative law or regulations to be issued by the President himself,” he said.

At the moment, Aguirre said it is not clear if the compromise deal can be made “in just the present power of the President.”

“Pag-aaralan muna (It will be studied),” he assured.
