ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal — A mad dog suspected to be rabid was killed by concerned citizens here after the canine randomly attacked at least 11 persons in this city the other day.

City Veterinarian, Dr. Cornelia Vergara told The Manila Bulletin the dog killed was an “Aspin” or “Asong Pinoy” and taken to the City Veterinarian’s Office at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Reports from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) showed that the dog was first seen wandering in the vicinity of Martinez Street and started biting indiscriminately random passersby.

The dog then scampered away to Bonifacio Street and continued attacking more victims before it went to M.L. Quezon Street, a busy street which is a short walk away from Antipolo Cathedral.

Witnesses told authorities that concerned residents tried to catch the dog alive but its fierce appearance prompted them to hit the dog with a wooden club and stones until it fell dead.

Emergency responders of the city government brought the victims to the hospitals where they were given anti-tetanus and post-exposure shots, said Dr. Vergara.

Dr. Vergara said although the stray dog does not show signs of any external disease, an indication that it might be a neglected dog.

She said the head of dog was brought yesterday morning to the National Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Quezon City for confirmatory testing to find out if the dog had rabies.

Meanwhile, the city health office is monitoring the condition of all of the victims who have all been given immediate medical treatment.
