Duterte fires 190 gov’t execs for corruption

- By GENALYN D. KABILING

Nearly 190 government officials have been fired by President Duterte for allegations of corruption and neglect of duty.

The President said he was doing his best to eliminate corruption in the bureaucracy after asking the erring officials to resign quietly to spare their families the embarrassment.

“I said I will stop corruption. I’m doing my best,” the President said during a federalism summit in Camarines Sur last Tuesday.

“I have fired almost 190. Ayaw ko lang ibulgar. Sinabi ko, ‘Mag-resign ka na lang’ (I don’t want to reveal their names. I said, ‘you should just resign,’),’’ he said.

“Alam mo bakit? Kasi kung titingnan ko, ‘yung mga anak nila, abogado na, doctor na, I do not want to embarrass you publicly. Go. Wala akong sabihin. Basta mag-resign ka lang (Do you know why? Because as I see it, their children are lawyers, doctors even, I do not want to embarrass you publicly. Go. I won’t say anything. You just resign),” he said.

Duterte said he recently dismissed two officials from the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission “for sitting on the papers for almost one year.”

The PRRC officials earlier wrote an apology letter but it was too late. Duterte decided to fire them for causing undue delay in the construction of a skyway project in Metro Manila.
