PSC, POC get cozy; cold war thawing?

- By NICK GIONGCO

Commissioner Ramon Fernandez of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) yesterday met with Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) first vicepresident Joey Romasanta, a move that could pave the way for the two warring groups to settle their differences.

The past few months, Fernandez has been very critical of the POC, whose president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco was charged with libel by the former basketball star for alleging calling him a ‘game-fixer.’

“It was light,” said Fernandez, who later expressed his willingness to bury the hatchet provided that Cojuangco goes the extra mile.

“I wasn’t the one who started it all,” said Fernandez at the Philsports Arena where the PSC was holding consultative meetings with collegiate league stakeholders.

Romasanta acknowledged what Fernandez said about the breakfast meeting that was also attended by karatedo’s Raymund Lee.

“”We were just warming up with each other,” said Romasanta, sounding pleased that he spent some time with Fernandez despite the two outfits’ bevy of differences.

“Nothing serious…some of the things that we talked about was my time during Gintong Alay,” said Romasanta, who is Cojuangco’s most trusted an in the POC.

Fernandez was also delighted that he came to realize that Romasanta handles some key posts in the POC, something the commissioner believes will enable him to deal easier with the POC.
