Planning begins for Manila Bay bridge to connect Cavite, Corregidor, and Bataan

- By MAR T. SUPNAD

The much-awaited ambitious Manila Bay bridge that will link Cavite-Corregidor-Mariveles (Bataan) which is said to be the biggest-ever coastal bridge in the country, will soon become a reality after a foreign firm and Governor Abet S. Garcia of Bataan signed officially last Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding for the project.

Garcia, who represented Bataan, said the official MOU signing was done at Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City.

He said the China-based CSCEC Straight Construction and Development Company, Ltd. will explore the feasibility of the proposed construction of the Manila Bay bridge, a more of less 22 nautical miles that will connect Cavite to Bataan, passing thru the historic Corregidor Island.

Aside from the long coastal bridge, the group will also constuct the International Seaport of Mariveles.

Also present during the MOU signing were Engr Emmanuel Pineda, chairman and administrator of Bataan Freeport and Atty Joey Angeles, head of Bataan’s PPP (Public, Private, Partnership) and executive of CSCEC.

Garcia said the project had been approved by the National Economic and Development Authority andthe Dept of Transporation after noting its necessity and is just awaiting the nod of President Duterte.

If finished, travel time from Mariveles to Cavite will take only around 15 minutes.

“If this project pushes through, Bataan will become the next NCR (National Capitolal Region) in the country as the province will become a sure magnate for more investments,” pointed out Garcia.

Garcia predicted that Bataan will by then become the alternate transshipment point area and sea port that will decongest Metro Manila and North harbor.
