Sec. Villar opens longer Laguna Lake Highway

- By BETHEENA KAE UNITE

An additional 1.3 kilometers of the Laguna Lake Highway or C-6 has been opened to motorists yesterday.

The newly opened section of the road is the project’s Phase 2 which further expanded the paved Laguna Lake Highway to 4.5 kilometers, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

A three-meter wide bike and jog lane was also completed.

“In building the road network in the Philippines, it is important that we also put in place more pedestrian infrastructure. This will not only happen in Luzon but also in Visayas and Mindanao,” DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said.

A pedestrian infrastructure and green architecture will also be incorporated in the creation of key infrastructure projects, Villar added.

Earlier this year, the Phase 1 of the project has been opened to public with additional lanes that stretch to about three kilometers.

Under phase 2, two 1.3-kilometer lanes will be constructed to widen the road.

Plant strip, sidewalk, turn out, and drainage works will also be added in the 3.2 kilometers concrete paved segment that was earlier completed.

This phase had a total funding of 1140.331 million.

When completed, Laguna Lake Highway is expected to reduce travel time from Taytay to Bicutan from an hour to only about 30 minutes.

With this, Villar said, travelers between Rizal and Makati and Taguig would benefit the most from improvements of the road capacity.

“With this highway, the traffic from EDSA and C-5 will be greatly reduced,” Villar said.

According to DPWH-National Capital Region Director Melvin Navarro, the road can also be utilized going to the airport without using C-5 or EDSA if you are from the eastern periphery of the metropolis.
