ASEAN lanes along EDSA

- By ANNA LIZA VILLAS-ALAVAREN

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will set up special lanes along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related meetings, which is happening in two weeks.

Bong Nebrija, MMDA operations supervisor, said they will be installing plastic barriers that will separate two inner lanes of EDSA for exclusive use of vehicles carrying foreign leaders and delegates attending for ASEAN summit set in November.

"This early we are advising motorists not use the ASEAN lanes as these are for the swift passage of the delegates," said Nebrija, during the agency's radio program over DZBB.

During Sunday's dry run, Nebrija said they were try to simulate the convoy runs for the ASEAN with plastic barriers lined up 30 meters apart along EDSA.

However, some motorists were confused and entered the Asean lanes.

Nebrija said assigned motorcycle riding traffic enforcers will act as ‘sweepers’ to ensure that route of the convoy along EDSA and other throroughfares in southern parts of Metro Manila are clear.

"The distance of the barriers are wide enough for motorists to exit anywhere. Let us obey traffic enforcers that will order you to exit five minutes before the convoy passes through," said Nebrija.
