Plenary indulgence from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel rites
Those who will participate in the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival in the Philippines of the image of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel on May 4, 2018 will gain plenary indulgence, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle announced in a circular letter dated January 22.
“Those who will join the celebration shall receive a plenary pndulgence as approved by the Vatican,” read the circular addressed to priests, religious men and women in the Archdiocese of Manila.
The Code of Canon Law (Can. 992) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471) define an indulgence as a “remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.”
To gain plenary indulgence, however, one must fulfill the following three conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father.
Cardinal Tagle encouraged everyone to relive the arrival of the image in the country by joining the Salubong and Traslacion on May 4.
The Salubong portion of the event, will comprise a fluvial parade at 5 a.m. at Manila Bay.
It will be followed by a Mass at Quirino Grandstand to be led by the cardinal.
After the Mass, the Traslacion or procession of the image from the Grandstand to San Sebastian Basilica will be held at 8 a.m.
