Jose Rizal University boosted its Final Four campaign yesterday as it bested Letran, 22-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-18, in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Bombers regained their steam in the tight second set after a bumpy start to pick up their fifth win against three defeats.

Shola Alvarez exploded with another impressive performance, draining season-high 30 points highlighted by 25 kills and four aces as JRU joined San Sebastian at joint fourth.

Dolly Versoza also made her presence felt for the Lady Bombers by adding 17 points while Marcy Rivera provided 33 excellent sets.

Letran slipped to its fifth loss in eight outings, no thanks to its 31 errors.

Earlier, Emilio Aguinaldo College torched the service area as it outplayed Lyceum, 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 1725, 15-11.

The Lady Generals fired 13 service aces – five from Yvette Tongco – to survive the resilient Lady Pirates for their second win against six losses.

Despite the victory, EAC was already out of Final Four contention and was only battling for pride with only one game left for them in the eliminations.

Five players scored in twin figures for the Lady Generals with Ladiesheen Magbanua topscoring with 16 points built on 12 kills, two blocks and two aces.

Jaylene Lumbo scored all her 13 points on attacks, while Aira Binondo also finished with 13 points.

Jean Pablo and Tongco chipped in 10 points, respectively.

Bien Juanillo, Christine Miralles and Monica Sevilla tried to salvage some measure of pride for Lyceum but still fell short of their efforts against a more persistent EAC side.

Juanillo had 20 points, while Miralles and Sevilla scored 18 and 11 points in a losing effort.

Struggling with 40 errors, the Lady Generals also made up in their offensive end by posting 49 hits.

In men’s play, EAC bested Lyceum, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, behind the efforts of Joshua Mina and Paulo Lim, who led with 24 and 17 points, respectively.

The Generals overpowered the Pirates behind the net with 53 attacks and nine blocks compared to the latter’s 34 hits and eight blocks.
