PNP probes cop tagged in lawyer’s ambush try

- By MARTIN A. SADONGDONG

An investigation on the slain cop who was tagged in the ambush try of a lawyer in Quezon City has started, the Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) said yesterday.

PNP-IAS deputy inspector general Leo Angelo Leuterio said Police Officer 1 Mark Ayeras will likely lose his benefits, including that for his family after his death.

Ayeras was among the three motorcycle-riding gunmen who shot at Argel Cabatbat past midnight Tuesday at the corner of East Avenue road and EDSA northbound lane.

He was last assigned at the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO)-Regional Public Safety Battalion and went AWOL (absent without official leave) in August 2017, according to authorities.

“The investigation on that cop is already ongoing but initially, he has no existing criminal records,” Leuterio said.

Among the benefits a slain cop usually receives is the burial assistance, and financial aid for the bereaved family.

“However, even with his death, he will not be given benefits, including his family, because he committed a dishonorable way of getting out of the service,” he added.

Ayeras, who was the back rider in one of the motorcycles used by the suspects, was shot and ran over by Cabatbat and his two other companions. It was reported that he allegedly fired towards the victims’ black Montero car.

The victims’ SUV also ran over another suspect, John Paul Napoles, who was riding on another motorcycle. The third suspect escaped.
