Dabawenyos choose career over love

- By YAS D. OCAMPO

DAVAO CITY – Career over love. A Davao City study said that one out of five surveyed Dabawenyo singles are choosing their careers first.

The study was conducted by the University of Mindanao’s Institute for Public Opinion, which sampled 1,200 respondents equally distributed from the city’s three Congressional Districts.

From the 1,200 surveyed, four out of 10 were single, but those who were single were not lonely, the survey said.

“Their reasons on remaining single vary, yet the most prevalent is they are focused on their career (43 percent). They say that family comes first; their family comes ahead of their personal romantic desires (38 percent); while there are those who really choose not to find a partner because they are not interested with anyone around them (34 percent). The pain of a past relationship hounds some of them (21 percent) while others can desire nothing more when friends are there to fill the void of a company (21 percent),” the survey said.

“Some others remain to stay single because of religious belief (4%), while there are also others who are really willing and available, but just that nobody is there to receive the candor of their passion; just nobody is available (4 percent).”

The survey will be released yesterday, Valentine’s Day.

Other interesting results from the survey included the number of people who found “the one” after a few tries, versus those who decided to be with their “forever” on the first try.

“These couples, who have been together for some years, say that their current partner is actually not their first love. Thirty-six of the 59 Dabawenyos who are into romantic relationships had been into many relationships until they finally found that “someone” whom they can spend “forever” with, while 23 of the 59 Dabawenyos are in relationship with the person they call as their first.”

Meanwhile, the survey revealed that there were two out of 10 of those surveyed who were not committed to the people they were dating, while a majority said they “had chosen their current partner as a partner for a forever.”

“Some 6 percent just diddle around waiting for the right person” as they explore the dating pool.

Half of those in a relationship were married, while the rest were still “testing the waters.”

The survey also shows a sample of unconventional relationships, with two out of those in a relationship living in a domestic partnership, with almost the same number who are not married, and a small 3 percent were widowed.
