Egyptian bound for Basilan detained

ZAMBOANGA CITY – An overstaying Egyptian national suspected of having links with the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and Islamic State (IS) was held for questioning here yesterday by elements of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) at the Zamboanga City port before he could depart for Isabela, Basilan.

PCG Southwestern District Commander Capt. Ronie Gil Gavan said yesterday personnel of the PCG, Zamboanga City Station were conducting a Mandatory Pre Departure Inspection (MPDI) onboard WEESAM Express, a fast craft bound for Isabela City at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday when they noticed the presence of the Egyptian national.

Gavan identified the Egyptian national as Mohamed Shabaan Abdelaziz Negm, 37.

Gavan said Negm’s showed that he entered the country via Ninoy Aquino International Airport on February 12, 2017 and was allowed to stay in the country only until April 12, 2017.

The Egyptian was also taken into custody for having an expired visa.

Gavan said PCG-Zamboanga will take temporary custody of Negm for interview while verification of his personal background and status continues.

According to Gavan, all PCG stations under PCG District Southwestern Mindanao have been on high alert level status as contained in the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Orders issued by Secretary Arthur Tugade, which aimed to prevent the movement of lawless personalities in the areas, weapons and illegal drugs across the Sulu and Celebes Seas.
