CASIGURAN, Aurora — President Duterte said that Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to protect him from any plans to remove him from office.

Duterte made the statement during the commemmoration of the first year anniversary of the renaming of Benham Rise to Philippine Rise to assert the Philippines’ ownership of the underwater plateau.

“The assurances of Xi Jinping were very encouraging. ‘We will not---,’ eh nandiyan naman sila (anyway they’re there). ‘We will not allow you to be taken out of your office, and we will not allow the Philippines to go to the dogs,” Duterte said.

“Siguro kasi freely elected leader naman ako (Anyway, it is probably because I’m a freely elected leader), it could be a very justified statement,” he added.

Duterte earlier claimed that the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was plotting to oust him – an accusation denied by the US.

This was not the first time Duterte said that China will protect the Philippines.

In a speech in Davao City early this month, Duterte said that China assured that it will protect the Philippines from external threats.
