Two policewomen, who were abducted in Sulu late last month, were released by their captors at noon yesterday, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde.

Albayalde said negotiations initiated by local government officials and community leaders helped a lot in securing the freedom of PO2 Benierose Alvarez and PO1 Dinah Gumahad.

“They were released to the people close to Governor Sakur Tan,” said Albayalde.

Alvarez and Gumahad were abducted with two male companions, Jacksalem Blas and Faizal Ahidji, in Patikul town last April 29.

Reports said the policewomen and civilian companions were onboard a tricycle when they were accosted by a group of 11 armed men, led by a certain Mujir Yada, before they were taken away.

Ahidji was released May 7, and Blas a few days after.

It was not clear if ransom was paid to secure the release of the two policewomen after reports came out last week about demands being made by their abductors for P5 million.

According to Albayalde, local officials in Jolo reported that they were negotiating only for the unconditional release of the two policewomen.

“(Alvarez and Gumahad) will undergo medical examination and debriefing,” said Albayalde.
