The aroma of perfection
Macallan No.3 perfectly combines taste and flavor into a definitive whisky drink
Macallan No.3 perfectly combines taste and flavor into a definitive whisky drink
There are combinations that are just perfect for each other. There are those that seem to be logical and natural, just like the scorching summer heat and the cool inviting beach, or green sour mango and rancid bagoong. There are those that seem to be a little too odd but somehow still work, like an Armani suit with white sneakers, or Channing Tatum and Jonah
Hill in an ‘80’s cop movie revival. Among these, the last thing you would expect to be a perfect match would be a world-respected master perfumer and a master whisky maker.
Yet, somehow, Macallan, one of the world’s most awarded single malt whisky, made it happen. The glorious result? The Macallan Edition no. 3, the third release in the innovative Edition Series, whose plethora of aroma is given as much importance as its definitive flavor, much to the delight of any whisky lover everywhere—a perfect drink to accompany celebrations this Father’s Day, in fact.
Third Edition, First Class
What makes a certain type of whisky stand out? Single malts are a favorite of any connoisseur because of how it is derived from malted barley and distilled in a single distillery in the soils of Speyside, Scotland, giving it a richer, smokier flavor. Macallan has been known to uphold its reputation as a brand not just of impeccable quality but also of innovation. The Macallan Edition series, now on its third year, is pushing the boundaries of whisky innovation by putting emphasis on partnerships and collaborations. And with this year’s Edition no.3, the boundaries have been pushed even further.
World-renowned fragrance historian and master perfumer Roja
Dove, whose legend tells of his ability to identify 800 different scents blindfolded without fail, teamed up with Macallan’s master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno, who has been with the company since 1984 and was given the distinction of Master Distiller in 2000, to harness the potent combination of flavor and scent that makes drinking this 48.3 percent ABV drink truly defining and at the top of its class.
There are basically four aromas to enjoy when taking a sip of this barley gold-colored liquor marvel. It starts with a hint of calming vanilla, followed by the right blend of fresh floral scents. A citrusy fragrance slowly takes over before a chocolate finish tops it all off. The flavor itself, achieved through the use of 6 different casks of a combination of American Ex-Bourbon and European Cherry, is just as much of a journey in itself. Sweet fruit cake and green crisp apple are most evident on the first sip, topped with notes of vanilla, cinnamon and bold oak that becomes even bolder and more evident with each taste. These sensual combinations of epic proportions make the Macallan No.3 truly the first and the best of its kind.
Launch at Cove Manila
During the last day of February this year, The Macallan Edition no.3 was officially launched in the Philippines at the glitzy new Cove Manila Beach Club inside Okada Manila in Pasay City, where guests and media were treated to a night of flavors and fragrances to highlight the collaboration between Dove and Dalgarno. Rooms like the dessert-filled Chocolate Room, the heavenly scented Vanilla Room, the Citrus Lounge, and the make-your-own-potpourri Scent Room were put up so that those in attendance can experience each scent that the No.3 produces individually. The night was highlighted by Macallan Philippine brand advocate Adrian Tecson giving a short lecture on how to enjoy whisky the right way, where guests enjoyed a sample of the No.3.
“The emphasis of the No.3 really is the aroma, unseen in any whisky brand before,” said Adrian. “This Macallan variant is stronger than the usual, but whether you enjoy it with a little bit of water or neat, you really can’t go wrong with the No.3.”
Indeed, Macallan’s obsession with wood seems to be matched only with the olfactory superiority of the Edition No.3. The whisky world has never seen a drink like this yet, one that provides a powerful journey of the senses, and it’s sure to be a favorite for both seasoned whisky experts and the casual whisky drinkers alike.
