PNP chief calls on Mayor Sara

- By YAS D. OCAMPO

DAVAO CITY – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde paid a courtesy call on Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio at the City Hall here yesterday.

Duterte told reporters that the meeting was mostly cordial and routine, with City Hall denying that there was any talk of the implementation of “Oplan Tambay” and “Oplan Sita” in the city.

“In the first place, dugay na man na diri (that’s not even new for Davao),” Duterte said.

The lady mayor was referring to the recent implementation of the two Oplans nationwide, which has drawn severe criticism from several quarters, among them the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

The new operations are aimed at ridding the streets of loiterers at night.

Earlier this week, police spokesperson Sr. Insp. Teresita Gaspan said that the city was already implementing very strict rules in the streets.

It is also illegal in Davao City to drink in public, especially outside the liquor ban hours starting 1 a.m.

Meanwhile, Duterte ordered Davao City Police Office Director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum to account for cases of deaths during legitimate operations.

She also recommended having civilian witnesses during operations so that there would be no less suspicion on any deaths that could be attributed to police.
