‘Libreng Sakay’ for Muslim women students attending night classes

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – In response to reports that some Maranao women were allegedly being abducted here and in Iligan City recently, a group of young Muslim students have taken the initiative to secure Muslim women by giving them free ride after their evening classes.

Aslani Balt Jr., a law student and founder of the “Linding Ko Mga Bae” (LKMB), which means protection for women, said they were taking the cudgels of keeping their women safe from reported abductions.

Balt, together with other Maranao men, organized the LKMB, with the “Libreng Sakay Program,” in which they rent public utility vehicles (PUVs) to ferry Muslim women from their schools to their residences within the city at night.

The other founders of LKMB are Balt’s brother Andy, Mishari Lucman, and Mikko Adiong.

“These reports of attempted kidnappings, we won’t allow that,” he said, adding that they have launched this program to prevent such incidents.

The issue surfaced following reports of alleged abductions being circulated on social media recently.

“We want the safety of our women,” Balt said, stressing that Maranao females have become the target of these reported abductions.

The program was launched recently by renting a van and a jeepney to ferry Muslim woman-students, who have night classes at the Xavier University and Pilgrim Christian College.

A lady law student, who requested anonymity, said she was very thankful to the organizers and the program.

The reported series of kidnappings of Moro women, she said, has become a regular topic of discussion in school and at her workplace.
