Ericsson showcases 5G technology live here
Ericsson the other (August 8, 2018) demonstrated 5G technology using its 5G trial system with data speeds of 23 Gbps, a first ever in the Philippines, as part of its 30th Anniversary celebrations in the country.
The 5G technology translates to a US$1.8-billion opportunity for telecom operators in Philippines.
More importantly, evolution to 5G will enable 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than current 4G networks.
To help operators capture growth opportunities presented by new 5G use cases, Ericsson has expanded its 5G Core System offering with new capabilities to support 5G NR and also enhanced its Distributed Cloud solution.
Ericsson’s 5G Business Potential report found that operators can add a revenue of up to US$619 billion (36 percent) to their forecast service revenues of US$1.7 trillion in 2026.
They can do this by targeting the digital transformation of other industries, such as automotive and manufacturing, using 5G-IoT technology.
For the Philippines, in 2026, there will be an anticipated US$1.8-billion revenue opportunity for telecom operators addressing industry digitalization with 5G technology. The largest opportunity for operator-addressable 5G-related revenues will be in the manufacturing and energy and utilities sectors.
“5G will open up new revenue streams for operators as they go beyond being connectivity and infrastructure providers to become service enablers and service creators. 5G has the potential to enable US$1.8-billion incremental revenue opportunity for telecom operators in Philippines,” according to Nunzio Mirtillo, Head of Market Area South East Asia, Oceania and India.
The vendor’s two-day technology showcase at the Shangri-La at the Fort, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, ‘‘Unleashing the Next Wave,” also includes 5G use cases in 3D Augmented Reality, Mining and Healthcare, along with the latest 5G-ready products and solutions from Ericsson.
Ericsson has an end-to-end 5G platform comprising 5G core, radio, and transport portfolios together with OSS/ BSS, network services and security.
The 5G demonstration reinforces Ericsson’s commitment to bringing in the latest technology innovations to Philippines and developing the 5G ecosystem in the country to support a Digital Philippines.
“Ericsson has been a key part of the telecom ecosystem in the Philippines for thirty years, bringing voice and data services to millions of customers in the country,” Mirtillo pointed out.
“We are the first to market with solutions that enable today's networks to evolve smoothly to the next generation of technologies. 4G is the foundation of 5G and Ericsson is well poised to help the operators in the Philippines to transition seamlessly from 4G to 5G,” he elaborated.
Ericsson’s new 5G platform comprises the 5G core, radio and transport portfolios, together with digital support systems, transformation services and security.
All installed base of radios from the Ericsson Radio System delivered since 2015 will be 5G NR-capable by a remote software installation.
Ericsson recently completed its 5G platform with the launch of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) commercial software, based on the recently approved first 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard.
