Rufa Mae Quinto now also an ‘indie’ actor

- ByALEX VALENTIN BROSAS

Rufa Mae Quinto feels it’s not whim but necessity for any actor to do indie films at least once in their career. “It’s different now, it’s the millennial generation na and so there are new breed of directors and actors. I’ve been in the business for 23 years but I felt I needed to meet and work with them,” said she, the lead star of “Bagyong Bheverlynn,” an official entry to the 14th Cinema One Originals.

She was offered to do indie films before but nothing materialized.”

“At that time, the budget for indie films was not that big and the audience, not as receptive as they are now. It’s different these days because there are so many indie festivals like Cinemalaya, PPP, Cinema One Originals. People are fully aware of the existence of indie films.”

While she knows many indie films are acting vehicles, she doesn’t know it with “Bagyong Bheverlynn.”

“I don’t know if I can win an award for my role. It all depends on the taste of the judges. If they want drama, our movie is a comedy so it won’t appeal to them. If they would go for a comedy, I might win an award,” she said then laughed.

Motherhood

A mother now, Rufa Mae candidly shared her year-old daughter will soon get tutorial and swimming lessons. Although she’s a “hands-on” mom, her schedule does not permit them to be together 24/7. “She has a yaya and I also see to it there’s a family member who looks after her,” she said. Rufa Mae sees a mini-me in her daughter. “She’s like me. She acts like me because she sees me every day. She mimics me. Her laughter is good for sitcom. She inherited that from me,” the actress proudly said.
