Au­gust 2018 HIV cases down – DOH

One thou­sand forty seven new cases of hu­man im­mun­od­e­fi­ciency virus (HIV) in­fec­tion were re­ported and recorded in Au­gust this year, the De­part­ment of Health-Epi­demi­ol­ogy Bu­reau bared Fri­day.

The num­ber is 57 cases fewer com­pared to the same pe­riod last year.

159 HIV-re­lated deaths were re­ported in Au­gust this year.

The DOH added that sex­ual con­tact re­mains the pre­dom­i­nant mode of HIV trans­mis­sion.

"Other modes of trans­mis­sion in­clude nee­dle shar­ing among in­ject­ing drug users (17 cases), two were preg­nant at the time of di­ag­no­sis and both are from the Na­tional Cap­i­tal Re­gion," the DOH said.

Metro Manila had the most num­ber of HIV in­fec­tioin cases in Au­gust this year with 328, fol­lowed by Cal­abar­zon (173), Cen­tral Lu­zon (119), Cen­tral Visayas (108), and Western Visayas (58).

"The first case of HIV in­fec­tion in the Philip­pines was re­ported in 1984. Since then, there have been 58, 181 con­firmed HIV in­fec­tion cases re­ported," the health de­part­ment said.
