Politics is being eyed by police as the possible motive in Friday’s killing of a former municipal councilor in Cordon, Isabela who was set to file his candidacy for a local elective position this coming week.

Senior Inspector Christopher Danao, Cordon chief of police, said homicide investigators are looking at either politics or personal grudge as the motive in the shooting of former councilor Jose Bugbog, of Barangay Wigan.

Senior Police Officer 3 Franklin Alvarez, case investigator, said Bugbog was driving his Asian utility vehicle (AUV) through Barangay Turod Norte when gunmen aboard a sports utility vehicle (SUV) opened fire at his vehicle at 4:15 p.m., Friday.

It was apparent that Bugbog was the target of the two shooters as none of his three female companions in the vehicle were hit, investigation showed.

“Ligtas naman ang tatlo niyang kasama, maliban sa isang babae na nauntog (His [Bugbog’s] three companions survived, but one woman had a bump in the head),” SPO3 Alvarez told The Manila Bulletin.

He said Bugbog was taken to a nearby hospital, but declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The group had just come from Barangay Tanggal and on their way to Barangay Centro when the killers struck.

It was learned that the victim was scheduled to file his COC for councilor of Cordon this week.
