Cooler weather rolling in, says PAGASA

- By ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

Colder weather, especially in Northern Luzon, is expected to prevail in the coming days as the country currently experiences the transition of winds to the northeast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday.

Meantime, the inter tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), which is the breeding ground for potential low pressure areas and tropical cyclones, will bring more rains over Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao until the weekend.

Getting cooler The prevalence of easterly winds, warm and humid air coming from the Pacific Ocean, is a manifestation that the country’s climate is shifting to northeast monsoon or “amihan.”

Another manifestation that amihan is coming is the lower air temperature over the country, particularly in Northern Luzon.

Northeast monsoon season usually prevails from late October to early March, and reaches its peak in February. Thunderstorms, rainshowers

PAGASA said Palawan, Western and Central Visayas, and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the ITCZ.

Flash floods or landslides may occur, PAGASA warned.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

These areas may also experience sudden heavy rains due to severe thunderstorms that could cause flash floods or landslides over low-lying or mountainous areas.
