A DECADE OF DAPPER
Garage Magazine celebrates 10 years of pushing men’s fashion forward
Garage Magazine celebrated another milestone with its historic “Street Dapper Kings 2018: The 10th Anniversary Ball,” held last Sunday at Tent City of The Manila Hotel, which was transformed by Amante Fleurs Flowers and Styling into a medieval black box, complete with Gothic chandeliers and dark drapes. Hosted by Miss Grand International 2016 first runner-up Nicole Cordoves, the event was also in celebration of the release of its special anniversary issue where Garage Magazine honors the guys who show stellar fashion sense as the best-dressed men of the year.
“Garage has always chronicled Filipino menswear since its inception,” says Garage editor-inchief Rey Ilagan. “And I’ve always found it exciting when we celebrate it, especially together with our 10th Year Anniversary.”
The Street Dapper Kings who were present during the event were actor Ruru Madrid, fashion photographer BJ Pascual, singer Jason Dy, pastry chef Christian Mark Jacobs, film and commercial director Gino Santos, race car driver Marlon
Stockinger, and the best dressed man of the year and current Garage cover star Alden Richards. Others in the list are actor Edward
Barber, model Tommy Esguerra, surfer Luke Landrigan, and athlete Kiefer Ravena. All of them were selected for their distinctive personal styles that are more about personal expression rather than putting on what’s trendy.
“Street Dapper Kings” also presented a menswear fashion gala that featured collections from designers Jerome Lorico, Francis Libiran, and Michael Cinco. Lorico’s pieces were very English-inspired, with its long coats that would fit right in the royal court and motocross looks with that rock ‘n’ roll edge. Libiran, meanwhile, played on logomania by creating patterns with the FL emblem on his luxe casual pieces and lounge wear. Cinco dressed up the multi-faceted globetrotter in both slouchy streetwear looks and smart suits that come in a mostly dark palette, albeit relieved by some sparkle and the colors of fall. The distinct looks that matched each collection— from the bronzed yet wintry glow sported by Cinco’s models to the more ascetic appeal of Lorico’s—were done by the talented artists of Make Up For Ever, while the dapper hairstyles were fashioned by Vivere Salon.
Led by Rey, the “Street Dapper Kings 2018” held a Chivas toast for the magazine’s decade-long history in publishing and fashion. Music was provided throughout the evening by DJs Mark Thompson and Julian Estrada, and ready for any emergency— though nothing untoward happened during the evening, thank goodness—was the Philippine Red Cross ambulance stationed outside the venue.
“I would say my favorite part would be the making of the ball: working with the Garage team, Direk Robby Carmona and the whole Saga Events team, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, and of course our esteemed designers Jerome Lorico, Francis Libiran, and Michael Cinco,” says Rey. “‘Street Dapper Kings 2018’ and Garage are collaborative efforts and this year’s ball is no exception. Garage will continue to innovate on print as well as enter the digital platform with the same passion.”
“Street Dapper Kings 2018” was made possible with The Manila Hotel as the official event venue sponsor and Chivas as the official liquor sponsor. Other sponsors included Empire Studios, ODV, All Scope Cinema, and the Philippine Red Cross.
