JBC opens ap­pli­ca­tions for SC va­cancy

The Ju­di­cial and Bar Coun­cil (JBC) on Fri­day opened ap­pli­ca­tions for a seat at the Supreme Court (SC) which was va­cated upon the ap­point­ment of Chief Jus­tice Lu­cas Ber­samin.

The JBC an­nounced that in­ter­ested ap­pli­cants have un­til Jan­uary 22 to file their ap­pli­ca­tions and re­quire­ments.

“The date of ac­tual re­ceipt by the JBC of the com­plete documentary re­quire­ments shall be deemed as the date of fil­ing,” read the an­nounce­ment signed by SC Clerk of Court and JBC Ex Of­fi­cio Sec­re­tary Edgar Aricheta.

The qual­i­fi­ca­tions of ap­pli­cants shall be reck­oned from the said dead­line.

In the same an­nounce­ment, the JBC said it has also opened ap­pli­ca­tions for two seats at the Le­gal Ed­u­ca­tion Board (LEB), par­tic­u­larly, the po­si­tions of chair­per­son and reg­u­lar mem­ber.

The JBC noted the terms LEB Chair­per­son Emer­son Aquende and reg­u­lar mem­ber Ze­naida Elepano will both end on Jan­uary 13.

Ber­samin took his oath as chief jus­tice on Novem­ber 28 af­ter he was ap­pointed by Pres­i­dent Duterte on Novem­ber 26.

Ber­samin bested four other can­di­dates in the short­list for chief jus­tice, namely,

SC As­so­ciate Jus­tices Antonio Car­pio, Dios­dado Per­alta, Estela Per­las-Bern­abe and An­dres Reyes Jr.
