PRC sets up 2 outdoor hospitals

- By JEL SANTOS

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has so far set up a 20-bed and a 50-bed Emergency Medical Units (EMUs) or outdoor hospitals, at two of the most crowded hospitals in Manila following Department of Health (DOH)’s declaration of measles outbreak in various parts of the country.

“We are over achieving. It is important that we become prepared in case more hospitals request our support to cater to measles patients,” Richard Gordon, PRC chairman, said.

EMUs are fully equipped to perform in-patient intervention for measles cases. Furthermore, it features durable cot beds and air-conditioning units that are fit for hospital set-ups.

“We don’t want to turn away patients. That’s why as an auxiliary to the government, PRC is ready to augment the hospitals’ services,” Gordon said.

Gordon revealed that PRC is in talks with two hospitals in Quezon City and one hospital in Caloocan following their requests to install similar medical tents.

PRC said that EMUs are manned by their volunteer doctors and nurses from local chapters and partner institutions.
