PWU CENTENNIAL UNFOLDS
One hundred years ago, seven Filipinas founded what was to become the first university for women in Asia founded by Asians. The Philippine Women’s University (PWU) celebrates this historic event with a whole year of activities starting this February, highlighting PWU’s continuing commitment to education in service to the family, community and the nation.
PWU President Dr. Francisco Benitez presented the centennial Initiatives at PWU. Special guest was Alice Walton, of the Walmart family, who is returning to PWU where she received an honorary degree in 1994.
Other centennial events spearheaded by alumni from PWU, JASMS, PWC of Davao and Iloilo as well as the Bayanihan Folk Dance Company are: “I Love PWU”, a whole-day Bazaar at PWU’s Taft Avenue campus culminating with a special Bayanihan performance at 4 p.m. on Feb. 16; “Shall We Dance” hosted by Golden Jubilarian HS class ’69 at 2 p.m. in Savanna Moon on Feb. 18; Open House in JASMS Manila on Taft Avenue and the new campus in QC on Feb. 19; and cultural tours of MiraNila Heritage House on Feb. 20-21. PWU Nursing alumni are hosting a Biennial Dinner on Feb. 20 at Novotel QC and a Clinical Conference at PWU on Feb. 21 with nursing icon Sr. Callista Roy, who is flying to Manila courtesy of Philippine Airlines, the official carrier of the PWU Centennial. Also on Feb. 21, PWU-JASMS Rondalla will present the 11th “Himig ng Lahi” concert at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the PWU Concert Hall. PWU’s MedTech alumni are recognizing outstanding achievers on Feb. 22; and on Sunday, February 24, alumni from all over the world are attending the Grand Centennial Homecoming at the Conrad Hotel in Pasay City. Raffle prizes, including round-trip tickets to Los Angeles and London courtesy of PAL, will be announced at the homecoming program directed by Floy Quintos and produced by Lyca Benitez Brown.
PWU’s Centennial Committee, spearheaded by Dr. Eugenio “Boy” Abunda, is inviting alumni to get involved in this year’s centennial activities and play a part in PWU’s next hundred years. For more information visit the PWU100 page on www.pwu.edu.ph or email alumni@pwu.edu.ph.
