Boy, 8, drowns in Malabon resort

An 8-year-old boy drowned in a resort along M. H. Del Pilar Street, Barangay Maysilo, Malabon City on Sunday morning.

Police identified the victim as Nigelmin Berinio of Pacheco Street, Barangay 67, Tondo, Manila.

According to a report, the victim and his mother, identified by police as July Anne Berinio, 25, were invited by the latter’s boyfriend to a family outing at the said resort.

A certain Mark Anthony Guia, 17, told police that while he was swimming, his foot touched the victim’s body at the bottom of the pool.

Guia alerted his friend, a certain Erickson Uy, 18, and the resort’s lifeguard, Leidielyn Cruz, 37, who tried to revive the boy using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), investigation showed.

Later, the victim was rushed to San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital in Malabon City but was declared dead-on-arrival by the attending physician Dr. Larry Aquino at about 11:41 a.m. (Minka Klaudia S. Tiangco)
