Karla Estrada on KathNiel status, her upcoming film, and the Comedy Momshie moniker

Amid speculations that Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla are having “relationship problems,” his mom, Karla Estrada, sets the record straight: Not true.

The issue began when the two allegedly unfollowed each other’s Instagram account, making fans worry “something” is going on. Actually, Kathryn immediately addressed the issue and said it was all “accidental.” However, some eagled-eyed netizens noticed she attended a film event alone, while he was reportedly out of town with some friends.

At a press conference, Karla asked the public to not make mountains out of molehills.

“Let’s stop assuming,” she said in Filipino. “If there’s something not good happening to them, I’ll be the first to know. Kathryn already explained the issue and Daniel is just laughing it off. Let’s forget the ‘issue.’”

The actress-singer said she has never had any issues with Kathryn, saying she’s beautiful inside and out.

“I’m good with their relationship. They’ve both matured as actors and as people. They help each other and I don’t have anything bad to say about her,” she said. “Also, if ever they have a problem, I don’t think it will be a good thing to post it on social media. Like I always say, hindi tayo dapat maglaba ng maruming damit sa social media kasi ang mga netizens, wala din naman silang maitutulong.”

As for Daniel seemingly missing in action these days, Karla said he’s on vacation this month.

“He’ll be doing two films in March so he is resting before those projects.”

Heart matters

Karla gives advice to her children on matters of the heart.

While she is no expert, the 44-year-old thinks her experiences are enough, after getting brokenhearted four times.

“I give advice but I don’t force it on them. I let them experience heartbreak because that will make them strong and courageous,” she noted.

Karla rarely talks about her love life with non-showbiz boyfriend Mark Yatco, but she did that time. According to her, they’ve been in a long-distance relationship for years now. He is in Colorado, managing some businesses.

She actually enjoys their setup. “I mean, there are no expectations, there’s no too much commitment. We’re just relaxed. The important thing is we’re both happy.”

Fun-filled film

Karla’s upcoming comedy film is “Familia Blondina.”

It is her first time doing the genre but she didn’t find it hard, believing she’s a natural comedian.

“Familia Blondina” is about Cindy, a woman who leaves her family and moves to the US to marry an American soldier. They have three children, all blonde.

When the American husband dies, he leaves her in debt and she has to go back home to the Philippines with her three-blonde children to support them. She goes through a series of misadventures looking for a job. She meets Tony Boy, a widower with two blond children too. They become a blended family raising their children on what it means to be a Filipino.

Playing Tony Boy is Jobert Austria. It is his biggest break in film.

Karla lauded Jobert’s comedic timing.

Written by Mel Mendoza-del Rosario of the hit movie “Tanging Ina,” “Familia Blondina” aims to deliver a laughter-filled output for all the Filipino families.

Director Jerry Lopez Sineneng, on the other hand, talked about the experience of doing the movie.

“It was all fun,” was how he put it. It helped that he is also a “masayahing director.”

“I know how it feels to work with a terror director. The work is difficult as it is, so let’s not make it harder by becoming a terror director. There’s always a nice way to say things and that’s what I did here. So everybody happy,” he said.

Joining Karla and Jobert in the cast are Marco Gallo, Kira Balinger, Xia Vigor, Chantal Videla, Heaven Peralejo, and Awra Briguela.

Produced by Arctic Sky and distributed by Cine Screen, “Familia Blondina” opens Feb. 27 in cinemas nationwide.

Momshie moniker

Karla is touted as the new queen of comedy but she wants to be called Comedy Momshie instead.

“It’s more relatable. It’s like people can always talk to me because I’m their momshie,” she said.

Still, the 44-year-old said she needs to prove herself worthy of the title.

Karla, who also gears up for the release of “Barna,” dismissed competition with other comedians like Pokwang and Ai Ai delas Alas. In fact, she hopes to work with them in the future.

“Imagine, how much of a riot that would be,” she laughed.
