BATANGAS CITY— A Batangueño graduating student was honored by the city government here, Tuesday for being named the Best Position Paper Awardee in the recent Asia World Model United Nations (AWMUN) held in Bangkok, Thailand, last month.

Out of 1,326 delegates ages 17 to 25 from around the world, Deignielle Bert D. Arellano, a 20-year-old BS Medical Laboratory Science student of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU-Batangas), received the distinguished award under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Council.

The delegates were divided into councils such as IMF, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Labor Organization (ILO) , World Trade Organization (WTO), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Arellano was among Filipino delegates who bagged awards in different categories on their councils.

AWMUN is a conference designed to encourage young leaders to develop networks, and improve their communication skills and diplomatic skills.

This year’s theme is The World’s Dilemma: Enhancing World Action on Climate Change.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved a resolution which was sponsored by Councilor Nestor Dimacuha who said Arellano’s position paper on climate change will encourage people in every nation to do their share in mitigating the disastrous effects of climate change.

“Through his paper, he sent a strong message that the battle for climate change is continuing duty and obligation of every nation” Dimacuha said.

Arellano, who belonged to the IMF Council, was assigned to tackle the effect of climate change and present solutions for the unequal burden of rising temperatures in low-income countries.

He said he was tasked to make a position paper for Congo and passed it a week before he flew to the youth conference.
