Shooting at funeral wake leaves 4 dead

INFANTA, Quezon – Four persons were killed and two were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a funeral wake in Barangay Ilog, this town,Wednesday night.

Killed were Herman Cuento, 70; Leon Cuento, 73; Manuel Cuerdo, 41, chief barangay tanod, and Michael Cuento, 50, small town lottery (STL) manager, all residents of the place.

Wounded were Maximo Cuento, 65, a local government employee, and Napoleon Miras, 68, chairman of Barangay Poblacion 1 in this town,

Police Col. Osmundo de Guzman, Quezon provincial police chief, said the four victims died on the way to Claro M. Recto Memorial District Hospital. The two wounded were in stable condition, police said.

The victims were attending the wake of a villager when a man walked over to Michael Cuento and shot him.

As he fell to the ground, the suspect shot him again several times.

The other victims were hit by stray bullets, reports said.

The gunman fled on a motorcycle.

De Guzman said Michael Cuento, was the driver at the office of the mayor. He was reportedly ambushed sometime during the 2016 on election period but survived.

Investigat­ors are trying to find out if the killing is related to Cuento’s quarrying business or him being an STL manager.
