J UST A THOUGHT: Papin, “Tukso” and “Pag-ibig Na Walang Dangal” by Eva Eugenio, “Sayang” and “Minsan-Minsan” by Claire dela Fuente, “Bakit Ako Mahihiya” by Didith Reyes, “Balatkayo” by Anthony Castelo, and “Bawal Na Pag-ibig” and “Kapalaran” by Rico J. Puno. These titles can provide good teleserye material. They can be bent to fit more adult themes, sexy enough for late night viewing. I like it that they’re in Filipino, in contrast to all our rom-com movies whose titles are all in English. How difficult it has been to distinguish one from the other. Years from now, young people will confuse our movies with those made in Hollywood. ‘The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.’ —Mark Twain In the late ’80s, Katy dela Cruz was the focus of a musical that carried her name, “Katy,” produced by Celeste. Some years back, a musical based on Yeng Constantino’s songs was mounted. However, some people thought it was too early in the day to do so, rather premature as Yeng has been around for only 10 years and has not yet grown a full body of work. Most recent is that musical based on the songs of the trio APO Hiking Society, and still another based on the hits of Eraserheads (“Ang Huling El Bimbo”). • • • MORE JUKEBOX HITS: With the overwhelming success of teleserye “Halik,” what’s to stop networks from cashing in on established titles based on hit songs? “Halik,” down to its last two weeks, is inspired by the legendary hit song by ’90s rock band, Aegis. The song has remained a big hit through the years, earning support from among a great majority of the masses, who provide the biggest chunk of the teleserye market. On TV, “Halik” scored its highest rating of 29.3 per cent on Nov. 8, according to Kantar Media. “Halik’s” success can spawn a new line of teleseryes based on popular OPM hits that cater to a mass audience. We used to call them jukebox hits. Yet, they’re the very same songs that connect to TV’s target audience. While we’re at it, credit to Aegis’ discovery and eventual success in recording goes to Buddy de Vera of Alpha Records, who produced the group’s legendary debut album that fetched hits like “Halik” and “Basang-basa Sa Ulan,” among others. De Vera, of course, is the same legendary record producer of superstar Nora Aunor. R13 1:00 , 3:50 , 6:45 , 9:40 PG 12:30 , 3:35 , 6:40 , 9:45 Baduy, bakya, jologs.
