ART ALL AROUND

-

ONGOING: ‘Last Full Show’ VENUE: Sining Kamalig Gallery, Upper Ground Floor, Ali Mall, Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City

“Last Full Show” brings down the curtain on the legendary Sining Kamalig Gallery, in existence for almost half a century. Founded in the early ‘70s by sisters Mrs. Balboa and Mrs. Corito Kalaw, Sining Kamalig was a vanguard of Philippine contemporary art. It encouraged the exploration of non-traditional and experimental art, as evidenced by their support of Shop 6, an art group spearheaded by the late Roberto

Chabet, whose barrier-breaking concepts paved the way for the eventual acceptance of works previously deemed provocative and unacceptable to the public sensibility.

Participating artists are: Pandy Aviado, Tikoy Aguiluz, Yob Achecruz, Heber Bartolome, Jeff Dizon, Hermisanto, Raul Lebajo, Cid Reyes, Mario Patdu, Bong Paz, Riche Yee, and Roy Veneracion.

MAY 2: ‘Romancing with Light’ VENUE: Legacy Art Gallery, 2257 Don Chino Roces Avenue Extension, Makati City

The Visual Arts Guild presents “Romancing with Light” at the Legacy Art Gallery. Participating artists are: Romulo Galicano, Dante Silverio, Ed Lantin, Gig de Pio, Junn Rocxa, Romeo Ballada, Julz Punzalan, Horace Gillego, Otto Neri, Maridi Nivera, Rellie Liwag, Lita Wells, Tina Periquet, Tessa Mendoza, and Cesar Aljame, with guest artists Andi Cubi and Clint Normandia.

The artists investigate and explore the force and mystery of light, and how its luminous emanation and vibration through colored pigments heighten our awareness and appreciation of reality even as it intensifies emotion and gives shape to landscape, still life, portrait, or non-physical, abstract realms. “Romancing with Light” runs until June 6.

MAY 4: ‘Fly-By’ VENUE: Boston Art Gallery, 72 Boston corner Lantana Street in Cubao Quezon City

“Fly-By” is Thirteen Artist Awardee Dansoy Coquilla’s 28th Solo Exhibition.

There is one painting on this show called Curtain Call. Actors on a stage are caught midbow, hand to hand, and looking upward. There is a curtain, there is a wooden floor. The center figure is wearing a Phantom of the Opera mask. Although still done in his iconic painterly style, the subject is markedly different from his previous focus on the ordinary-man-in-the-street. Because the artist finds inspiration from things happening in his life, perhaps we shall be seeing more painting influences from his Film Center day job. On his 28th solo exhibit, Dansoy still has something new to give.
