According to the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), the eating habits of Filipinos have taken a turn in the wrong direction, with obesity on the rise every year. If we are what we eat, then it only makes sense to keep our digestive system, or gut, in tiptop condition. Our gut is lined with billions of bacteria, not all of which are the harmful or “bad” kind. For good bacteria to do its job, it needs to be fed like any other live organism. Probiotics are microorganisms that feed the healthy bacteria in our gut and are responsible for helping to digest food. They produce vitamins and protect the body against the bad, disease-causing bacteria. For best results, doctors and nutritionists recommend regular intake of both preand probiotics. The good news is that there are readily accessible “synbiotic” supplements available locally like NutraHealthyGut, a combination of pre- and probiotics. It offers a unique supplementary alternative for those who do not eat food naturally rich in pre- and probiotic content, or simply prefer the convenience of taking the recommended dosage in one capsule. Doctors and nutritionists recommend taking one to two capsules 30 minutes before meals, or one to two capsules one hour after meals. NutraHealthyGut is available in select Mercury Drug stores, select Mediscount Pharmacy branches, and MedExpress Drugstore outlets in major hospitals nationwide.
